Meet 29-year-old Dr. Charlene Makita, whose business-mindedness and passion for science led her to found organic hair care line Natural Aura.
After completing her Masters and Ph.D. work on the Moringa plant, she discovered that there was a gap in the market for a Moringa-based organic hair care line. Using her scientific background in analytical chemistry, she began creating various concoctions until she arrived at the perfect formula and in 2016 Natural Aura was born.
Natural Aura, which makes products for men and women, has a range that includes a hair growth oil, hair thickening serum, whipped hair soufflé, and beard oil. The company’s mission is to encourage natural healthy hair and their mantra is ‘healthy hair begins at home’.
Charlene was awarded an R110,000 grant by the Nation Research Foundation for her academic accomplishments and she used half of that as start-up capital to fund her business. She believes strongly in the power of the Moringa plant and cites research which points to the plant overtaking Aloe Vera in the next five years.
Charlene hopes to grow Natural Aura into a leading organic lifestyle brand that extends beyond hair care and into bath and products. She has visions of leaving an international footprint by venturing into the rest of Africa, Europe, and the US.
My goal is to leave an international footprint by venturing into other African countries, the US and Europe.
Charlene’s story is inspiring because she used the findings from her thesis to create a commercially viable product. She is a testament that anything is achievable if you’re willing to put in the work.
On your journey as an entrepreneur, Charlene says, “Don’t be afraid to ask for help”. Dr. Charlene Makita is a leader and a visionary and we’re rooting for her continued success.
