Mummy Mthembu-Fawkes: Totally down to Earthy

Meet 34-year-old Mummy Mthembu-Fawkes, the beautiful and brilliant founder of natural hair and body care company Earthy. Mummy previously held a position as head of business development for a large corporate for several years before embarking on her entrepreneurial journey.

Mummy says when she entered the world of work her afro was deemed unmanageable and untidy so she had no other choice but to process her hair with chemicals in order to tame it. However, as she grew in confidence, Mummy found her voice and learned the importance of standing your ground as a young, black woman in corporate South Africa. She started to proudly wear her hair natural and one day decided to start a company that would create products which cater to women with kinky, curly, hard to manage hair.

The Earthy range promises to repair disappearing hairlines, promote hair growth and provide tips on maintaining strong, healthy natural hair. In addition, the products can also be used on relaxed hair, dreadlocks, beards and even on your skin. The Earthy skincare range has a selection of face and bath soaps including the best-selling Cappuccino and Goat’s Milk soap.

Since launching in November 2014, the company has grown immensely and now boasts 2 online stores, 3 retail stores, and almost 400 female independent distributors. Earthy’s flagship store is based in Newtown Junction Mall in Johannesburg and they can also be found at 27 Boxes in Melville.

The number of men vs women in entrepreneurship and leadership is still not same. I hope that Earthy will change the status quo when it comes to that.

Mummy says her company’s motto is to celebrate women’s natural beauty and empower more female entrepreneurs. “I hope we can make a positive change to SA’s economy and prove that woman are capable of working together and achieving great things.” Mummy attributes her success to a good work ethic, perseverance and a lot of hard work.

Head over to and support this proudly SA business. We salute this incredible visionary and businesswoman.

  • Aw, this was an extremely nice post. Finding the time and actual effort to make a very good article?
but what can I say? I put things off a lot and don’t
manage to get nearly anything done.
