Thula Ndema and Thato Masondo: The dream team behind Sobae

This is Thula Ndema and Thato Masondo, the faces behind the frozen dessert brand Sobae. The two best friends who enjoy exploring Johannesburg and buying fresh fruit from the city’s street vendors wanted to create a different way of eating fruits, with less effort but something that could still be devoured.

Sobae makes handmade sorbet using a combination of fresh fruit, herbs, and spices sourced from the city market. The company, which has only been operating for 10 months, can be found in Maboneng on the corner of Fox and Kruger Street at Essential Vintaj store.

Not only are they selling delicious blends of sorbet, but they also teach people about the infusion of fruits and spices that go into the perfect sorbet. Their customer base is growing steadily and they have been receiving positive great feedback from buyers. Vegans especially are loving Sobae.

Sobae is inspired by a love tale of two best friends who love exploring Johannesburg city together in search of new adventures.

This what they had to say about taking action: “Standing up is the first step to success, from there you plan, do your research and you’ll be surprised by what you are sitting on”.

We salute this power duo for owning the first black-owned sorbet shop in Johannesburg. Let’s show their Sobae some love.
