Meet New York-raised MBA graduate, entrepreneur and founder of Black Girl Sunscreen Shontay Lundy. Shontay, who loves the outdoors, hiking, going to the beach and rooftop pool lounging, wanted to enjoy these pursuits while still protecting her skin.
Underwhelmed by the lack of products on the market for people of colour, she decided to create a product that offered broad-spectrum sun protection and blended effortlessly with dark skin tones.
BlackGirlSunscreen was developed by Shontay and an accredited chemist and launched in 2016 using her savings. Their signature line is ultra-sheer, weightless, fragrance-free, melanin reinforcing SPF 30 sunscreen moisturiser that uses natural ingredients. BlackGirlSunscreen is not just a sunscreen, it can also be used as a daily moisturiser.
The company plans on expanding its product range, with a few new products currently in development. Shontay hopes that BlackGirlSunscreen will raise awareness in the black community about the importance of protecting one’s skin.
