Unathi Mdiya: Creating events to remember

Meet 25-year-old Unathi Mdiya, the founder and creative director of events company Nay Nay Events. Diepkloof-born Unathi launched the business last year and the Midrand-based company recently celebrated its one year anniversary in operation.

After 5 years working in the television industry as a production coordinator, she found herself wanting to do something different that she would enjoy and could sustain her. Her love for being around people and entertaining sparked the idea to start her own events company to help people with planning and designing their functions.

“NayNay Events is a business that cares for its clients and the name NayNay means brave, bold, and courageous and that is who I am as an individual and entrepreneur,” says Nathi. She says Nay Nay Events takes pride in ensuring that its clients are happy and satisfied and aims to create an atmosphere of celebration and excitement.

The company’s services include decor, flower arrangement, and function co-ordination. She funded the business using her last paycheque from her permanent job and now employs two extra hands to assist her. Unathi says the level of detail and excellence she puts into her events has helped build trust and confidence between her and her clients and that’s how they are able to make a lasting impression. She hopes to see the company “grow immensely” and employ at least 100 young black South Africans.

Her parting words for aspiring entrepreneurs is, “Stop thinking and DO! Everything you want is on the other side of fear. Also, not every business requires you to have money. Fundings and donations will come. Let your idea/work speak for itself.
