You may have seen the t-shirts, now meet the woman behind apparel brand T-shirts For Change SA Nicole Jowett. The 29-year old, who has always had a passion for philanthropy and volunteer work, came up with the idea to make statement t-shirts that would resonate with women in an effort to raise funds for a women’s shelter for Woman’s Day. This was in response to women’s issues and women’s rights gaining prominence in the media worldwide last year.
The t-shirts had the word ‘Feminist’ emblazoned on them. What was supposed to be a once-off campaign garnered so much praise from customers that Nicole was inspired to turn it into something bigger, “a new way for South Africans to really make a difference in a collective way”.
The company raises funds through the sale of these t-shirts and other apparel and R100 from each item sold is donated to a selected charity. The beneficiaries include Vision Africa Education, the Frida Hartley Women’s Shelter and the Luleki Sizwe (LGBT+) Foundation. T-shirts For Change SA to date has managed to raise R30,000 for its beneficiaries.
Nicole says: “When you buy from T-Shirts For Change not only are you making a tangible monetary contribution to the causes you care about, but you are also helping to raise awareness and start conversations, and support local industries.”
All of their new 2018 stock will be produced locally as the company shows its commitment to empowering South Africans. The company’s other products include sweatshirts, swimsuits and they are currently working on tracksuits to be ready this winter.
I hope to start more conversations in a positive way and inspire South Africans to remember that a small contribution really adds up when we stand together.
